Last weekend marked a very special weekend for Passage West Youth Choir and Our Big Little in Choir in Monkstown. On Friday evening Passage West Youth Choir launched their debut CD entitled ‘After All’ with an open-air performance in Fr O Flynn Park in Passage West.  The CD comprises of 9 tracks and is a mixture of easy listening popular pieces and Christmas songs.  Michael McGrath TD performed the official launch of the CD and congratulated the children and their leaders on their wonderful achievement.  The CD costs €10 and will be available after Masses in Passage West this weekend.  All proceeds will go to Barnardos and Cope Foundation.  The choir promoted the CD by singing at the end of our 11.00 a.m. Mass in Passage West last Sunday with a wonderful rendition of ‘A Thousand Years.’

On Saturday morning, Our Big Little Choir, the Children’s Choir in Monkstown, sang in Cork Airport as part of this year’s Airport Choirs initiative, performing a wide range of Christmas favourites and popular hits.  Tony Hadley, lead singer with the 80s group Spandeau Ballet was passing through the airport at the time and came over to listen to the children.  He was so impressed that he accepted their invitation to join them in singing their signature Silent Night/Night of Silence melody, a moment which was captured by a passer-by and posted online on Cork Beo.  The video quickly went viral and the story was covered on Red FM and 96 FM local radio during the week.  By all accounts the mothers were more excited than the children at meeting Tony Hadley!

It is wonderful to see the children in both choirs enjoying themselves and being recognised for their wonderful talents. We feel truly blessed that they are part of our parish.  A special word of appreciation to the leaders of both our children’s choirs who give unselfishly of their time, energy and musical talents in guiding and directing them.  Both choirs are now busy preparing to lead us in our Christmas Eve liturgies.  Our Big Little Choir will lead our Blessing of Crib Service in Monkstown at 3.00 p.m. and the Passage West Youth Choir will lead the Christmas Family Mass in Passage West at 6.00 p.m.  We look forward to them helping to raise our hearts and minds to God this Christmas through the power of music and song.                                                                         Fr Seán
