Everyone associated with the Church of the Sacred Hearts in Monkstown was deeply saddened this past week to learn of the sudden and unexpected death of Mary Ryan who had for many years played an important role in the daily life of the Church. For years Mary opened the Church each morning and closed it again each evening. Like her mother before her she rang the Church bell that called us to prayer and in more recent years rang the Funeral Bell to mark the funeral prayers of those who had died in our community.  Mary tended the flowers at Our Lady’s Grotto in the Church grounds and was in many ways our unofficial sentinel keeping an eye out for any suspicious activity.  For many visitors who called to the Church Mary was also an unofficial tour-guide who loved sharing her deep knowledge of the history of our Church with them.  It was wonderful to see so many people from our community gather to honour Mary last Sunday evening and again on Monday morning.  Mary will be sadly missed.  May the Lord grant her the reward of her quiet and faithful service and may she rest in peace.                             Fr Seán
