Celebrating Your Childs Baptism

Congratulations on the birth of your child.  We would be delighted to celebrate your child’s baptism with you here with us in the Harbour Parishes, if you so wish.

Baptism is the Sacrament of Welcome that celebrates our belonging to the family of God and we look forward to celebrating this special moment in your child’s life with you and your family.

Our Baptisms are celebrated at the following times in each of the respective Churches in our parish.

Shanbally Church 2:00 PM Every Saturday as Available
Ringaskiddy Oratory 2:00 PM Every Saturday as Available
Passage West 3:00 PM Every Saturday
Monkstown 4:30 PM Every Saturday

We are also happy to accommodate families who wish to celebrate a baptism on Sundays, at the following times:

Passage West 12:00 Noon Every Sunday
Monkstown 12:30 PM Every Sunday

Please note that there may be occasions during the year when, due to other parish commitments and services such as weddings, it is not possible to have a baptism at one or more of the above times.

Booking Your Child’s Baptism

Once you have chosen the date and Church for your baptism, please contact Cathy in the Parish Office. Alternatively, you can email Cathy indicating a phone number at which she can call you back during parish office hours.  Cathy will be in a position to tell you whether the day and time you are looking for is available.

Parish Office Hours

Tuesdays            10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon

Thursdays          5.00 p.m. to  7.00 p.m.

Tel:                      021-4863267

Once Cathy has taken the booking, she will send you a Baptism Registration Form which you are asked to complete and return to the Parish Office along with a photocopy of your child’s Birth Certificate.

Often more than one family wishes to book their child’s Baptism in the same Church on the same date.  In such cases we accept bookings, to a maximum of two, for these children to be baptized together within a single baptism ceremony.  Given that we have multiple Churches in the parish and that we want to afford families the opportunity to baptize their child in the Church they feel most associated with, unfortunately we cannot accommodate requests for individual baptisms when there is another request for that date in the same Church.

Participating in your Child’s Baptism

At our parish celebrations of baptism we warmly welcome the participation of family and friends in proclaiming the scripture reading and leading the prayers of intercession.  We especially welcome the participation of older brothers and sisters and look forward to them being part of the celebration.  Colouring sheets for the Celebration of Baptism are available upon request and can be forwarded to you by email to allow younger members of the family feel involved in the celebration.

On the day of the baptism you are asked to bring a Baptism Candle which will be used during the ceremony.

We look forward to celebrating this special and sacred moment with your family and friends.

Adult Baptisms

We warmly welcome any adult who wishes to be baptised and received into the Church.  In such cases the Church has a special process called the RCIA – The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults – whereby the person seeking to become part of the Church is accompanied over a period of time by members of the community as they learn more about the Christian faith.  This usually involves meeting each week to spend some time in prayer, reflecting on the Gospel together and exploring different aspects of the Christian calling.  The emphasis is not on formal study or learning but rather on a shared journey in faith and friendship wherein a person is made to feel welcome and can grow in their own sense and understanding of the Christian vision and the life it calls us to live.

At the end of this journey the person receives the three Sacraments of Initiation, that is to say, Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation, during the community’s celebration of the Easter Vigil.

Any adult interested in becoming part of our faith community is asked to contact one of the priests of the parish.
