Bishop of Cork and Ross invites people to respond to Church changes with a time of prayer, listening and discernment
On a weekend when heavy rain and winds had blown across his diocese, it seems more than coincidence that a new pastoral message from the Bishop of Cork and Ross should begin with a scripture quote: “Even the wind and the seas obey Him”.
Bishop Fintan Gavin read his message on Sunday to pilgrims attending the annual Mass at St. Finbarr’s Oratory, Gougane Barra.
Bishop Fintan’s message is a call to the people of the diocese to commit to a year-long time of prayer, listening and discernment about the future of the Catholic Church in the parishes and chaplaincies of the diocese.
In a time of unprecedented change in society and the Catholic Church in Ireland, people are understandably concerned about their parish’s future, he said.
Harbour Parish Funeral Ministry
The Harbour Parish Funeral Team has been in place since 2018.
Lay people are trained up to be part of the Funeral Ministry. The priest in the parish contacts the Co-Ordinator of the Funeral Team to advise them that there is a funeral and to delegate 2 people from the team to go to the Funeral Home or the Home of the deceased to do vigil prayers. These prayers are very meaningful to the family of the Deceased.
Funeral Ministry Formation Team welcomes new people to take part in the training in order to be part of Harbour Parish Funeral Team.
The dates for Funeral Team Formation and Training are October 8th 15th and 22nd in the Sacred Heart Centre, Western Road, Cork

For a Synodal Church: communion, participation and mission
In October 2021 the Catholic Church's synodal process on the theme of synodality began. This was the first time that a worldwide listening process and consultation with parishes and dioceses was attempted and many people in Ireland took part in a listening process during the early months of 2022.
Did you take part?
Have you been wondering what happened after that?
Much has happened since then. Your participation formed part of a national document that was sent to the Synod office in Rome in August 2022. It also formed part of a global document called Enlarge the Space of Your Tent, which was published last October and then formed part of a presentation given by the Irish delegation that travelled to Prague this February for the first ever Continental Assembly of the Catholic Church's synodal process.
